Fantastic post Nside.

I copied it and paste it in a word document so I can reread it when I am in a downswing again.

I would like to wish you good luck, but it's unecessary. I know you will get out of this downswing soon.

Sorry to see you are on a downswing. Everything you about the inevitability of it happening is true, of course, although it does not seem to matter as much when you are in the middle of the downswing. Your advice helped when I was coming out of the downswing in January.

Looking back, I gained a lot from going through that 400+ bb downswing in December-January. I learned 1) I can survive it and come out strong, even if it takes a long time (I finally feel like my limit game came back a month ago or so). 2) If I start losing I can get really grumpy about playing that particular game, which makes me make marginally poorer decisions 3) I do better when I play a wide mix of games, and 4) I do far better when I pay little attention to my overall bankroll. (Although I play comfortably within my bankroll, I just could not tell you within $1000 of what I have right now.)

I am sure you will get out of it, hopefully soon. And let me know if you ever want to get back into MTTs.

Great post nside! Good quality stuff. So far I have suffered fair sized downswings but nothing over an extended period of time.

When it comes I hope I am mentally prepared for it.

Bull: I suspect that the first big downswing ends many poker careers. This is particularly true for people who don't use good bankroll management. I've known friends who played 1/2 with $200. It doesn't take much of a bad run at all for them to go broke.

If it affects the rest of your life, like making you grumpy at your wife or kids, you probably should cut back. I do tilt in that way -- when I'm winning, I tend to play every time I wake up in the middle of the night or every time I get a free hour. When I'm losing, I don't have the same enthusiasm so I get in a lot less hands.

Thanks for the encouragement and sympathy from you both. Willy, I do understand what you mean. Now that I'm playing 30/60, the dollar figures are somewhat staggering. I do better when I just think about big bets. ;)

Its hard to explain how I think about it. I do feel quite calm in the sense that I'm confident in my play and I still have more money than when I started to play 30/60. However, it is one thing to accept that this is just how it goes, but it doesn't make it fun. Obviously, I'd still rather be winning big.

I wonder if there would be a way to find out how many people who take a 300 BB slide just quit and never come out the other side. I would be curious.

I've had very few winning sessions in the past 3 months, and as big as poker is in my life, I have had to contemplate giving it up. It makes me too grumpy. Instead I have throttled back considerably - probably playing about 20% as many hands as I was 3 months ago.

Good post - its a topic I never grow tired of contemplating.

Amen Brother!!!

Downswings, of which I'm on one now as well, hurt.

I definitely agree with the better players going through more pronounced downswings.... but let me tell, losing 4.5K in a month and a half hurts... regardless of your bankroll.
